Red Horizon Header

Film and Q&A Screened Saturday, July 10, 2021

Red Horizon is a documentary about an amazing group of young African-American men and women being trained as pilots, looking to help diversify the pilot profession. Less than 3% of pilots are black, and less than 1% are black women. These men and women are carrying on the legacy of the black Tuskegee Airmen, who served with distinction in WWII and returned home to face the same racism they had before.

THE LENS OF HOPE

These intelligent young pilots are paving the way for more like them to be trained as airmen and women to create an aviation culture of people from all different walks of life.

Filmmaker: T.C. Johnstone
Run time: 34 minutes

Where the name “Red Tail” came from:

Tuskegee Airmen in World War II

In April 1942, the Tuskegee-trained 99th Pursuit Squadron deployed to North Africa, which the Allies had occupied. … The tails of their planes were painted red for identification purposes, earning them the enduring nickname “Red Tails.”
